Don\’t you just hate it when somebody who\’s never been to drama school turns out to be a naturally gifted actor? And don\’t you especially hate it when that person is smart and funny and charming and beautiful to boot? It seems that lately there\’s been a crop of these kinds of actors popping up all over the place, in Britain particularly. One such actress that\’s caught my eye is Lena Headey. It was her role in Twice Upon A Yesterday that made me really notice her. What\’s interesting is that she has been in so many things I\’ve seen and was always a solid presence in those movies but it took this quirky romantic comedy for me to investigate her work further.
American audiences will recall Lena from her work in The Jungle Book with Jason Scott Lee or Gossip, a slightly forgettable movie with some major young Hollywood talent in it like James Marsden, Kate Hudson, and Joshua Jackson. But the Yorkshire born actress has been in some impressive stuff like Remains of the Day, Eugene Onegin, and the “Merlin” mini-series. One film she did that I cannot recommend too strongly, aside from the delightful Twice Upon A Yesterday, is Aberdeen. Lena plays a troubled young woman trying to bring her alcoholic father from Norway to Scotland to see her dying mother. It\’s powerful and painful to watch and I was so impressed with Lena\’s performance. She\’s also appeared in Ripley\’s Game with John Malkovitch and “one2watch4″ alum, Dougray Scott and Possession with Gwenyth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam.
Her biggest turns to date has to be her shining role as Queen Gorgo in the groundbreaking film of 2007, 300, opposite another one2watch4, Gerard Butler. She is currently appearing on US television in “The Sarah Connor Chronicles”.
Keep your eye on this one folks she sneaks up on you.
