Director Zack Snyder (300) brings another graphic novel to the screen with Watchmen.
“Watchmen” is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” – which charts the USA\’s tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes.
As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity… but who is watching the Watchmen?”
This is looking to be another breakthrough film from director Snyder as he bring the graphic novel to life. In addition, Tales Of The Black Freighter is a pirate genre comic book read by a young boy that hangs out by a Manhattan newsstand. It tells the tale of a castaway’s mental and physical deterioration and damnation as he tries to intercept a ghost freighter headed for his hometown. The comic panels from this pirate story are intertwined with panels from the main comic’s storyline, and is often accompanied by the “off center” street wisdom of an older news vendor. of the sub-story. Tales of the Black Freighter, MAY be added to the film version, if Zack has his way, but it definitely will be added to the DVD. A highlight of Black Freighter is that it will include the voice of 300 star Gerard Butler as the Captain.
Cast members include: Jackie Earle Haley (Walter Kovacs aka Rorschach), Billy Crudup (Jon Osterman aka Dr. Manhattan), Malin Akerman (Laurie Juspeczyk aka The Silk Spectre), Matthew Goode (Adrian Veidt aka Ozymandias), Patrick Wilson (Dan Dreiberg aka The Nite-Owl), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Edward Blake aka The Comedian), Carla Gugino (Sally Jupiter aka The “Original” Silk Spectre), Stephen McHattie (Hollis Mason aka The “Original” Nite-Owl) and Matt Frewer (Edward Jacobiaka Moloch the Mystic).
A complete package for comic and movie fans alike with an exceptional cast and Snyder\’s respect for the graphic novel! We\’ll be sure to watch this one as the excitement builds!
