It’s depressing: Billy Crudup looks better as a woman than I do sometimes. If you’ve seen Stage Beauty you’ll get my meaning. Mr. Crudup is fast gaining the reputation of being the kind of actor who willingly alters his own (devilishly fine) appearance for the sake of the character and the production. But luckily for us there are a few things out there that show his true talent as well as that gorgeous mug.

It started with a race; a long distance race for a gold medal. The first time I saw Billy Crudup was as Steve Prefonatine in Without Limits. Oh and hey look, ones2watch4 alumni Monica Potter was in that too. Imagine that! Billy would balance stints on Broadway with interesting indie films. I highly recommend Waking the Dead with Jennifer Connolly and the aforementioned Stage Beauty. There were the occasional bigger studio films like Mission Impossible 3 and Big Fish but Bill gravitates towards the smaller productions.

And then there was Watchmen. If you didn’t know who Billy Crudup was before this movie you will now. As the god-like Dr Manhattan, Crudup is likely to get the most exposure (literally and figuratively) of his career. I’m willing to bet that the projects after Watchmen will be bigger budgets and bigger directors. In fact up next is Public Enemies, a veritable babe-fest with Johnny Depp as Dillinger, Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis and 2007 Oscar winner Marion Cotillard. Talk about coming full circle, Billy plays J. Edgar Hoover. I think the world is safe though I doubt J. Edgar looked better as a woman than I do.
