Daniel Henney is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum wrapped in an Armani suit. (Props to the writers of The Simpson’s for that!) From the American Midwest, Henney made a huge splash as a model and actor in Korea. I mean they go nuts for him over there. So how is it I didn’t know of this man existence until he shot his way into my heart in X-Men Origins: Wolverine earlier this summer? A secret this good-looking should never be kept under wraps. It needs to be shared with the world!
So how exactly does a nice boy from Michigan end up as a hot commodity in Korea? Starting off as a model in Europe and Hong Kong Daniel ventured to The Land of the Morning Calm look for his mother’s family and to try his hand at television. Turns out it was successful venture and even lead to a critically acclaimed film role in a movie called (appropriately) Seducing Mr. Perfect (2006, which is stupidly not available on Netflix!) I can only assume Daniel plays Mr. Perfect. Daniel’s work on My Father (2007 and also stupidly not available on Netflix!) caught the attention of Wolverine’s star and producer Hugh Jackman and its director Gavin Hood. They flat out offered Henney the role of Agent Zero, the gun-toting bad-ass. No audition required even though the guy had never done any film work outside of Korea. Days later he was on a plane to the set in New Zealand and consequently into my life.
We Yanks will finally get a nice close look at our native son when the new CBS series “Three Rivers” debuts Sunday October 4th at 9pm. Landing a pretty big US TV series your first time at bat is not too shabby for our rookie. I’ve seen the pilot (pre-retooling version) about organ transplant doctors (staring one2watch4 alumni Alex O’Loughlin) and I enjoyed it. Daniel plays, and I quote: “Dr. David Lee, a womanizing surgical resident who’s broken as many hearts as he’s replaced.” Sweet, right? Hopefully scheduling and opportunities will allow for further examination of this new talent. For now I’ll be watching “Three Rivers” with the Thompson Twin’s song “Doctor Doctor” and Robert Palmer’s “Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)” alternating in my head. Bad case of lovin’ you, indeed.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine will be available on DVD September 15, 2009.
