I first saw David Tennant in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) and was immediately impressed and intrigued by him as an actor. I started watching “Doctor Who”, because I wanted to see more of this guy and I absolutely adored him as The Doctor, with his geeky-cute look and onscreen personality. At first glance, there wasn’t much about the looks of this gangly Scotsman to make my heart go pitter-pat and I was completely mystified why so many female fans thought he was the cutest thing that ever lived.
But then it happened. I don’t know when, but one day I realized David had grown on me. Perhaps it was seeing his touching performance as a shy scientist in “Einstein and Eddington” (2008). Or it could have been his playing the charming womanizer in “Casanova” (2005), (a character that seemed to come far too easily to him). Then again it could have been him playing a very, very, very bad boy in “Secret Smile” (2005), a role that required him to take his clothes off and showed (to my surprise) that even a skinny man could look good naked. (So I’m shallow. What of it?) His charming and intelligent personality off-screen, and the fact he\’s not afraid to flash his geek credentials in interviews, were definite contributions. Maybe I had finally succumbed to those big brown eyes and that famous hair of his. But whatever it was, I was and am officially twitterpated.
It’s a pity that few outside of the UK (and the Sci-Fi and Harry Potter worlds) are aware of David’s work. But I am convinced that after he leaves Doctor Who at the end of the year, that he will reach a wider audience that will love him as much as his current fans do. I daydream about him getting a break in the US with the lead in a big network TV show, or maybe getting a great character part in a major film. Or perhaps his extensive theatre experience and his successful run as Hamlet with the RSC this past winter will inspire Tennant to take a crack at Broadway. But whatever medium he decides to choose, I’m sure that those who discover him over the next few years will be as impressed by this charming man as I have been.
