Jai Stephen Courtney’s blonde curls first appeared atop the studly Varro’s head in Starz channel’s Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010). With an ensemble of super testosterone cast, Jai cemented that sweet and adorable hunky quality that made him endearing in all of the ten episodes in which he appeared with Andy Whitfield.
Soon after exiting the Spartacus arena and ditching the blonde curls, he sparred with Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher (2012). In 2013 he co-starred with Bruce Willis, playing his son in A Good Day to Die Hard, proving quite well he has the sustainability of an onscreen action hero. Felony had him playing a detective with Tom Wilkinson and Joel Edgerton. 2014 found him in two movies: I, Frankenstein with Aaron Eckhart and Divergent with Shailene Woodley.
An Australian who grew up in Cherrybrook, a suburb of Sydney, Jai attended Cherrybrook Technology High School and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He starred in several short films including one with fellow Spartacan Daniel Feuerriegel called Boys Grammar. He appeared on Australian television series Packed to the Rafters, All Saints, and To Hell and Bourke.
When asked about fun facts in an interview on Queen Latifah’s show in October, Jai mentioned that he once took ballet as part of an acting class and failed, stating his “plié was not up to scratch.” He said he also cooks and is handy in the kitchen. Outside of the interview, he plays the guitar and sings well.
This year he appears as Hugh “Cup” Cuppernell in Angelina Jolie’s directorial film, Unbroken, based on the true story of Olympian Louis Zamperini in World War II captivity. The film will be released on December 25, 2014 and stars Garrett Hedlund and Jack O’Connell as Zamperini.
2015 will be a busy year for Jai as three films will be released. In March he reprises his role as Eric the Dauntless leader in Insurgent, the sequel to 2014’s Divergent, and will once again star with Shailene Woodley. The following month in April, Russell Crowe’s film, Water Diviner, another war drama, will feature Jai and former Bond gal Olga Kurylenko. Currently, Jai is working on Man Down, with Shia LaBeouf and Gary Oldman.
The film to watch for in July, however, is Terminator Genisys, the reboot of 1984’s Terminator that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jai stars as Kyle Reese, the time traveling soldier who teams up with Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke, Daenerys from HBO’s Game of Thrones). Word is that the resurrected young Schwarzenegger will make an appearance in his birthday suit, as Jai will also time travel back in the same way.
If that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, the summer of 2016 will be the year of DC Comics’ Suicide Squad film, presenting Jai as Boomerang. Written and directed by David Ayer (Training Day writer and Fury director), Jai will co-star with Jared Leto as the Joker, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Will Smith as Deadshot. Jai is definitely the action superhero to watch.
