The first time I saw Sam Worthington I thought: what is this guy doing in a movie about tap-dancing steel workers? I mean this was a serious actor who by the looks of it couldn’t shuffle ball-change his way out of a paper bag. Well Sam got some juicy dramatic moments in the film Boot Men (2000) and it was all made abundantly clear. This summer audiences worldwide are going to get a chance to see this handsome Aussie in his first bona fide blockbuster and it will be abundantly clear to everyone why he caught my eye.
Sam’s got that rugged, good ole boy, manly-man appeal to him. He looks like the kind of guy you’d like to have on your side in a bar fight. He plays this charming roughneck in this Australian movie about a killer croc, Rogue (2007) that makes you wonder how close to his actually personality the character is. But in a film like Somersault (2004) (a personal recommendation) he gives such a sensitive performance you want to take him home and introduce him to your mother. Strong and sensitive, it’s a deadly combination.
We’ve got some tremendous things to look forward to seeing Sam in in the future. First up the much talked about sequel to the Terminator films Terminator: Salvation. Sam is the enigmatic Marcus Wright. Is he human or is he machine? Then we have James Cameron’s (not based on the cartoon) Avatar. The way I heard it Sam was filming Avatar when T:4 director McG asked his old buddy Cameron for casting advice. Cameron suggested Sam and the rest is cinematic history. We also have the tale of a love triangle, Last Night co-starring Keira Knightly. As of press time it was announced that Sam was going to be playing Perseus in the update of Clash of the Titans, a role made famous by Harry Hamlin (pre, pre- Lisa Rinna days). I have just one thing to say about that: Toga! Toga! Toga!
