Push
I’m mad, I’m hopping mad! Here I was all excited to go to the movies for some action, drama and a chance to oogle Chris Evans’ chest and all I got was action and drama! What the hell? How am I supposed to fuel my midlife crisis when I’m denied what I know exists under Chris’ shirt (and in some cases LAYERS – that’s right LAYERS – of shirts) on the big screen?
The disappointment of that major oversight aside, I wasn’t completely dissatisfied with the film. Once again I was just the mother with the drivers license taking my daughter to a movie she wanted to see. The fact that the trailer had been seen multiple times by her before each of her TEN viewings of Twilight probably had something to do with that.
Back to the film.
Nick is a second generation telekinetic who is hiding from the government agency, Division, that does testing on his kind. He only uses his power in dice games on the streets of Hong Kong. And he isn’t all that good at it. Enter Dakota Fanning’s Cassie. A street smart 13-year old with the ability to see the future.
First, who gave Dakota Fanning permission to grow up? I mean this does not bode well for my grand plan to stop my own aging process! Second, Cassie has major attitude for a 13 year old and is always hungry for chicken. It was like watching my own life on the big screen!
Back to the film.
Nick and Cassie team up to find Kira (Camilla Belle), the agency escapee that holds the key to bringing down Division and its leader, a evil, but still every charismatic, Djimon Hounsou, all the while, trying to stay one step ahead of a Hong Kong family hell bent on gaining the power Division holds. Along the way they pick up the underused Ming-Na, Cliff Curtis (the FBI guy from Live Free Die Hard who sounds far sexier with his native New Zealand accent) and Nate Mooney, who provides some comic relief.
All in all, it was your standard action thriller with bad guys, good guys, a few tender moments between Nick and Kira and the occassional twist that you could see coming. I am not sure I would recommend it, I am, after all, still smarting from the lack of Chris Evans’ bare chest, but it would make for good cable fare if you can catch it when it hits HBO.
