Danny Boyle (Slum Dog Millionaire) is anything but a formula motivated director, and Trance is his latest offbeat psychological thriller. James McAvoy (X-Men) plays the forgetful thief who renders the services of a mysterious hypnotist (Rosario Dawson, Sin City) as he eludes the threats of gangster head (Vincent Cassel, Black Swan). The tale spins unpredictably, refreshingly revealing layers of the truth, blurring lines between good and bad. Possibly Rosario’s best dramatic performance, James plays perfect neurosis, and Vincent draws out his sexier side. Seemingly chaotic and lengthy, it’s stimulating for its plot, graphic violence, and nudity of the main characters.
