Filed under 2011 Releases, In Theaters
Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) has always been the smartest man in the room…until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large—Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris)—and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder—a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle, designed by one Professor Moriarty. Mixing business with pleasure, Holmes tracks the clues to an underground gentlemen’s club, where he and his brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) are toasting Dr. Watson (Jude Law) on his last night of bachelorhood. It is there that Holmes encounters Sim (Noomi Rapace), a Gypsy fortune teller, who sees more than she is telling and whose unwitting involvement in the prince’s murder makes her the killer’s next target. Holmes barely manages to save her life and, in return, she reluctantly agrees to help him. The investigation becomes ever more dangerous as it leads Holmes, Watson and Sim across the continent, from England to France to Germany and finally to Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead as he spins a web of death and destruction—all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history.

Review – Toy Story 3
June 17, 2010 by Tracey Brown
Toy Story 3 is an utterly charming and enjoyable film. It is easily as good as the first two Toy Story movies and, in a number of ways, it is even better. It is beautiful to look at; full of many highly amusing (and genuinely emotional) moments, but also mixes in the more serious themes of growing up and accepting change.
The film starts with Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the whole gang panicking that their owner, Andy, is going off to college. They worry about what will become of them, now that Andy is all “grown up”. Will they be put in the attic to be handed down to the kids Andy might have some day? Or will they be donated to other children who will play with them again? Or will they experience the worst fate a toy can face, being thrown away? The ever optimistic Woody is convinced that Andy will take care of them, but the other toys are not convinced. They would prefer to be donated, but things don’t exactly turn out how they planned and they get into many scrapes and adventures trying to get back home.
One of the best things about Toy Story 3 is the amount of laughs it has and a lot of the most amusing moments are provided by the new characters. Ken (Michael Keaton) is of course, smitten with Barbie (Jodi Benson); Mr. Pricklepants (Timothy Dalton) is a hammy actor/hedgehog; Lots-O’-Huggin’ Bear (Ned Beatty) is not always as cuddly as he might seem; Chuckles the Clown (Bud Luckey) has a “tortured” past and adorable Trixie the Triceratops (Kristen Schaal) becomes the perfect buddy for Rex (Wallace Shawn).
But most of the laughs are at Ken’s expense. Young kids may not get all of the Barbie and Ken jokes, like his endless series of outfits from the 60’s to the 80’s and his ‘dream house” (which actually belonged to Barbie in “real life”) but their mothers and grandmothers will get a kick out of them. The most hilarious moments in the film are when Buzz’s “Spanish Mode” is accidentally turned on and he turns into the smooth “Latin Lover Buzz”, who is much more successful than the shy, “normal” Buzz at charming and wooing cowgirl Jesse (Joan Cusack). (It is worth noting that Spanish Buzz does a mean paso doble!)
The genuine emotional moments that come near the end of Toy Story 3 (as Andy is heading off to college) are noteworthy because the Pixar team succeeds again, where most “live action” films fail, in making an audience care about the fate of the characters in a film and in creating moments of real emotion that people can identify with – even if the characters are computer generated. There is much more to this movie than just entertaining kids for 90 minutes.
As with most films in 3-D lately, it is not necessary for Toy Story 3 to use this technology, except perhaps to show off the spectacular old west action sequence that starts the film, which is pretty impressive in 3-D. But with the advances in computer animation in the past 13 years, Toy Story 3 will still look great in theaters without 3-D
Thankfully, even though Toy Story 3 is a sequel, children (and adults) who have not seen the first two Toy Story films will still be able to thoroughly enjoy this movie together.
Review – Sex and the City 2
May 28, 2010 by Tracey Brown
As with the first movie, the Sex and the City 2 is really only a film for fans of the TV show. Those who did not watch the show and who did not spend six years wrapped up in the lives of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda will probably not be as entertained as hardcore fans. No one expects great cinema from a “Sex and the City” movie, fans just want to see more of their favorite characters and how the characters lives have changed and progressed. Despite the fact that Sex and the City 2 is a weaker outing than the first film, devoted fans will most likely be entertained and pleased.
This time around, each lady is encountering their own issues. Carrie is discontented with the routine her marriage has settled into; Samantha is fiercely fighting menopause; Charlotte ’s two children are more of a handful than she bargained for and Miranda is having issues with a condescending new law partner. All need a break, so when Samantha is offered a free first class trip to Abu Dhabi for a publicity job and invites her buddies, all accept. Of course, our fearless four have many amusing misadventures while on vacation and Carrie goes through a personal crisis that might threaten her marriage.
There are many entertaining bits in Sex and the City 2, such as the flashbacks to 1986 on how Carrie met all of her friends (complete with hysterically bad 80’s clothing) and the same sex wedding of Carrie and Charlotte’s best gay friends, which comes complete a gay chorus singing show tunes, decorative live swans and Liza Minnelli doing a frighteningly entertaining rendition of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”. There are also a funny scenes in Abu Dhabi when Charlotte and Miranda get drunk and have a heart to heart in their hotel and when the ladies sing “I am Woman” in possibly the coolest karaoke bar in the world.
But something that is missing from Sex and the City 2 are those relate- able moments that the TV show had – those truthful moments in life that every woman knows and that even those who think of a $50 pair of shoes as a splurge could identify with. The first SATC film still had these poignant moments, but they are scarce in this sequel and are sorely missed, as those were the moments that grounded the characters in some reality and made the show about more than just spoiled, rich girls with “fantasy” lifestyles.
Although setting the girls trip to Abu Dhabi affords plenty of opportunity for gorgeous scenery, an excuse for outrageously fun clothes and funny jokes about how Samantha’s sex drive and the conservative middle east really do not gel, it is a bit mystifying why the producers would send four sexually liberated characters to visit a conservative Muslim country and to have so many clichés about the Middle East in today’s political climate. But even though this part of the film can be slightly uncomfortable to watch at times, concentrating on the humor of the situations and the crazy shenanigans of beloved characters does help this issue fade to the background.
Ladies, in the spirit of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, do not drag your significant other to this movie; see it how it was meant to be seen, with your best girlfriends!

Review – Iron Man 2
Iron Man may be the funniest and wittiest superhero of all time, thanks to Robert Downey, Jr.’s outstanding performance and the film’s direction under Jon Favreau.
Unlike in most superhero films where the character is a caricature, Iron Man is believable in that it takes a bit of narcissism to think one can bring peace to the world by his own actions. Tony Stark, the billionaire behind the suit, has the resources and the intelligence to make things work, and this time he is up against the U.S. Senate. He keeps his wits about him as Justin Hammer (a weapons contractor played by Sam Rockwell) recruits a dangerous Russian, Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), a self-made, poor man’s superhero who also has past history issues with Stark, to outdo Stark and his weapons technology.
While the first Iron Man film was its Batman Begins storyline, this second installation attempts to introduce more nemeses and possible superhero partners. Scarlett Johansson, with a demure, straight-out-of-the-40s look as Natalie Rushman, Stark’s new executive assistant, astonishes the audience when she reverts to her alter ego, Natasha Romanoff (the name itself lends to images of Xenia Onatopp of 007’s collection). As Natasha, she sexily kicks ass with acrobatic martial arts moves in her skintight suit, knocking down scores of bad guys as Stark’s chauffeur (director Jon Favreau) happily exclaims he’s taken down one (his name is also “Happy”).
Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Pepper Potts, Stark’s super efficient personal assistant who keeps him intact until Stark begins to get reckless while hiding a secret from her. Their relationship progresses and it will be interesting to see how it works out should there be an Iron Man 3 in the future. In this feature, Don Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard as Lt. Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes. While Cheadle is a great actor, Howard’s previous version of Iron Man’s possible sidekick (the “silver” Iron Man) seemed to have more impact in comparison.
There are plenty of hard iron metal-on-metal action in this film as well as computer imagery. Iron Man battles not only Ivan the terribly unkempt and creepy technical genius, he fights his best friend and a mini army of soldier drones (similar to the metal soldiers in Star Wars Episode II). The sound editing is perfectly clunky-cool for all the flying metal and explosions. All the tough show of iron is offset by Stark’s use of computerized technology at the touch of his fingertips (shades of Minority Report). He manipulates digital graphics that seemingly float around him as he talks to the main “guy” Jarvis (voiced by Paul Bettany).
This is not the dark, psychological superhero film like Batman but a fun, entertaining ride with smart, witty Iron Man. The characters are memorably interactive with each other, and the dialogue at times is spontaneously funny. Iron Man’s suit is hard and shiny, yet he’s vulnerable to human weaknesses. Tony Stark remarks that he is Iron Man, but Robert Downey, Jr. is the perfect embodiment of Tony Stark.
Standard screen vs. Imax? That depends on how large an Iron Man you’d like to see onscreen.
Ultra cool moment in the film: Iron man literally suiting up in his suitcase.
Not-so-cool fact: the trailer clip that repeatedly plays on TV showing Iron Man telling Pepper that she completes him – is not featured in the full length feature.
P.S. After the ending credits there is a short clip hinting what’s to come next from Marvel Comics.
