Interview with Joe Manganiello

Joe Manganiello took the time to speak with me about a range of topics. Here he talks True Blood, travel, his first date with his current girlfriend, the downside to his recent fame, and how he wants to attend EyeCon. For extra fun, I tossed in some “this or that” questions where he was either quick to answer or had to do some debating. Read on!
Getting cast on True Blood was something that you really wanted. What is your favorite part about working on the show?
What is my favorite, favorite part about working on the show? It’s being in such good company I think. I come from classical theater training and when I went to college it was a bunch of kids that were hand-picked from around the world. I was around such brilliant, young minds and incredible artists with incredible teachers. Then I came to Hollywood and it was never that good again. You bounce around Hollywood with a bunch of people who are “actors” who don’t speak the same language as you. Then I wind up on True Blood then all of a sudden I’m back with….it’s like that Blind Mellon video. It was like I found my way back to the land of the bumblebees. Everybody speaks the same language. They’re all classically trained theater people. Very intelligent, and deep, and well spoken. So for me, it was like spending ten years wandering around in the woods and finding my way back home. It really feels like I am back home; like I’m amongst my people again.
How stoked are you about coming back as a regular for the fourth season?
In a lot of ways I’m happy. I was so glad they brought me on for six episodes and that was it. So, I didn’t know if Alcide was going to come back or not, I honestly didn’t know what they were planning. I’m super excited to get to play this character more, I’m excited to be on my favorite show permanently, Also, as a bit of a journey man actor, I mean, it’s nice to know where I’m going to be.
A steady job!
Yeah! It’s good to have a steady job! Aside from the fact that it is my favorite show and I’m playing my favorite character I have ever played. Honestly, every time I see a full moon I think, “That’s my moon!”
How are you dealing with the sudden amount of attention now that you’re on the show?
Well, that’s definitely been an adjustment. It’s weird when you realize that there’s somebody ….it’s 100 degrees out and there’s somebody sitting in a car outside your house waiting for you to walk out. Or if you just got done with a workout and there’s somebody waiting for a picture of you. So, that kind of stuff has been a bit of an adjustment. But, the other side of it is that I was at the gym today working out and this girl ran up to me and wanted to tell me that I am her and all of her friends’ favorite character on the show.
I think you became a very big favorite for a lot of people!
That’s amazing to me! That’s incredible to me! I mean, you are going to have that feeling that you’re being watched a lot more than normal. But, aside from that you’re going to get to share some really cool….fans are going to share some really cool stuff with you. I’m on a show that people love and I’m playing a character that people love.
Is there an actor or actress that would be your dream co-star any time in the future?
Well, Charlaine was asked who she would like to see on the show and she said that she would like to see David Bowie play Sookie’s great-grandfather. I think that would be unbelievable as a David Bowie fan, but also as a fan of Labyrinth. I think that would be the best addition to the show ever! A lot of people have been asking me who I would like to see play Alcide’s father. I have my dream wish list and I think Jeff Bridges would be great as Alcide’s dad. Or Sam Elliott or Sam Shepard; one of those guys would be a dream come true.
Do you have any other talents such as singing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument? We know you’re an athlete, but anything else?
Nice throwing. I’m serious! I’m an excellent, excellent, excellent nice thrower!
You have probably done a fair amount of traveling in your time, what’s your favorite city to visit besides your hometown?
Besides Pittsburgh, I love Australia. I love Australia.
I had read recently that you wanted to go to London – you need to get on a plane tonight. That is a spectacular city.
I am excited to go, but I am going to Greece and Italy for the first time next month. I’m so excited that it doesn’t even seem real.
I have a few questions from fans that were submitted to me. The first one is from Tommy Shaw and he saw that you were in attendance for the Monday Night Raw the other night and wanted to know if you had a favorite wrestler?
Well growing up my favorite wrestler was Randy “The Macho Man” Savage.
This next one only a Steelers fan or even a football fan would understand and I actually had to do my research, but Paul from Chicago wants to know if you own a Terrible Towel?
Yes I do! I own several.
Your real-life She-Wolf, Audra, who is absolutely stunning – Jessica from San Diego would like to know if she tunes in every week to watch her man in action?
She does. Actually on our first date I could not stop talking about this show that I was obsessed with that she hadn’t seen, which was True Blood. I think it was on our third date I brought her the DVD set of season one and she got hooked on it. So a lot of our first dates were spent talking about True Blood and within two months of us dating I wound up getting cast.
A lot of fans would like to know if you’re planning on attending the EyeCon True Blood convention in Orlando in November?
If they contact me, I would love to! So, tell whoever is running it or the promoter to contact Fifteen Minutes and….yeah, I’d love to!
I know Sam is confirmed and I think Kristin is confirmed, but I’m not sure of who else, but I know they would love to have you.
Great! Yeah, have them contact me for sure!

Being that I’m a huge fan of Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire series of mystery books, the choice of actors who would bring her beloved characters to life for the HBO series “True Blood” was one of great importance to me. And no doubt, to the other countless millions of readers and viewers as well. So when I first heard the part of the werewolf Alcide Herveaux had been cast I was a bit surprised to find the part went to a fairly unknown actor Joe Manganiello. As I rushed to scour the internet for tidbits on Joe I was immediately taken aback by his incredible good looks. Clearly he’d been sculpted by a roman god (*please refer to the Gallery O’Joe below) with his washboard abs, gorgeous dark wavy hair and easy smile. Even so, I was still holding judgment until I could see him in action on screen. After watching Joe make his first appearance as Alcide, judgment be damned, he wasn’t just a pretty face, the boy could act!
I quickly found out that Joseph Michael Manganiello was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. But even with a BFA degree there are no guarantees of success in the fickle world of Hollywood. Luckily for Joe his dark Sicilian good looks got him noticed quickly and landed him his first role in the 2002 movie, Spiderman as Flash Thompson along side Tobey Maguire. As much as I would love to see those dark chocolate eyes playing sexy on the big screen most of Joe’s work has been on television. From the CW’s “One Tree Hill” to CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother” he’s even appeared on CBS’s “CSI”, alive. And thank God for that because seriously, cutting up that body would have been pure sacrilege!
Even with all the television appearances Joe has had to resort to good old fashioned labor, like shoveling gravel and sand out of the back of trucks as well as doing some stunt work in Hollywood, just to pay the bills at times. Not that I’m bothered by that, hell no! There’s something to be said for a guy who isn’t afraid to get dirty and use his hands. Now if he’s a romantic at heart too that just might put him in league to be the perfect man. I’m just saying. Thankfully, with his confirmed recurring role as Alcide on “Trueblood” Joe won’t have to resort to using shovels and cement bags to keep his glorious body in tip-top shape. Working with a personal trainer three days a week twice a day should do the trick. He’s sure to be nice and tight for all those naked scenes. And bless him for it.
Beyond topping every Hot List of 2010 Joe’s future looks bright. Season 4 of “True Blood” will start filming in November and it’s just a matter of time before we see Joe’s sexy mug on the big screen as well. So, get on the ground floor of this investment. He’s definitely one2watch4!

Comic-Con 2010 – Exclusive True Blood Comic Cover
July 21, 2010 by Maura Reilly

San Diego, CA (July 21, 2010) – HBO and IDW Publishing are proud to announce the launch of the first-ever comic book series based on the network’s hit show True Blood. Available today at San Diego Comic-Con and comic retailers throughout North America, this sexy, visually striking comic series will add new and unique layers of supernatural drama to the wildly original Emmy®- and Golden Globe®-winning television show. Two exclusive versions of True Blood #1 will be available at San Diego Comic-Con, each with a different cover. Fans can find a special David Messina wrap-around cover at the IDW booth #2643. Select comic retailers throughout the convention will offer a second exclusive cover, featuring a monochromatic version of Joe Corroney’s cover.
Developed with the show’s Oscar®-and Emmy®-winning creator, Alan Ball (HBO’s Six Feet Under, American Beauty), IDW’s True Blood series is the exclusive, official show comics.
“I am very excited to be introducing the True Blood comic book series,” stated Ball. “These graphic novels are a great companion to the series and we are pleased that the popularity of the show is allowing it to branch out into different mediums.”
Beginning with issue #1, the True Blood comic series offers the same erotically-charged romance, wry humor, intriguing mystery and suspense the show has become known for. In this comic book series, Sookie and many other Bon Temps locals find themselves waiting in Merlotte’s bar for a strangely portentous raging storm to subside. Soon, they discover they’ve been trapped by an entity that feeds off of raw emotions and begins killing off the patrons one by one until his hunger is sated.
The plot was developed with Ball, along with series writers Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow, and co-written by David Tischman and Mariah Huehner. Beautifully illustrated by top tier artist David Messina, the series captures all the bloody details and sexy reveals of this exciting new adventure. Renowned artists J. Scott Campbell, Joe Corroney, and Andrew Currie join Messina in providing covers for the first issue.
The True Blood comics will explore the ongoing adventures of telepathic heroine Sookie Stackhouse, her vampire lover Bill Compton, best friend Tara Thornton, enigmatic and ancient vampire sheriff Eric Northman, loyal boss Sam Merlotte, brother Jason Stackhouse, perpetual-virgin vampire Jessica, and the flamboyant cook Lafayette Reynolds.

True Blood #1 (of 6, 32 pages, full color, $3.99) is now available in stores.

StephenMoyerOnline is hosting a Contest

I got this from Lisa over at SMO and wanted to pass along the information to our many many True Blood fans.
Dear True Blood Fans:
Stephen Moyer Online is now hosting a contest and give-away for the “MISSING BILL COMPTON” campaign. As a way to celebrate the premiere of Season Three of True Blood which airs on Sunday, June 13th, 2010 on the HBO Network and also as a way to celebrate the re-opening of our fan site for British Actor Stephen Moyer – we are holding these two contests.
Here is more info on the contests:
Stephen Moyer Online is now hosting two contests and give-aways as a way to
celebrate our re-opening as well as the premiere of True Blood Season Three which is due to premiere on HBO Network on JUNE 13TH, 2010.
Now there are two sides to this contest and give-away which is why we are calling it (2) CONTESTS & GIVE-AWAYS -
“MISSING VAMPIRE” POSTER CONTEST: The objective of this contest is for those who are talented fan artists to create a poster that displays our most loved missing Bon Temps vamp Bill Compton who was mysteriously abducted at the end of last season when he proposed to his long time mortal girlfriend Sookie Stackhouse. Now here is what we are looking for in all submissions:
- Originality: You must create something that is one of a kind – in other words “Your Own Work Of Art”
- Poster Size: Your creation must be 800×600 pixels in size dimensions
- Creativity: You can use any form of art medium (i.e. digital art, sketch, paint, photography, etc) to create your “MISSING VAMPIRE” poster and it must feature a photo of Bill Compton with a very catchy slogan or phrase stating Bill Compton is MISSING and if found please contact your local American Vampire League (or) Sookie Stackhouse. The slogan must be one of a kind as well as creative.
“What Has Happened To Bill Compton?!” Fan Fiction Story Contest: The objective of this contest is for those who are talented fan fiction writers to create their own scenerio on what they think happened to Bill at the end of season two when he went Missing In Action just as he proposed to to his long time mortal girlfriend Sookie Stackhouse. And here is what we are looking for in these fan fiction stories:
- Originality: You must create your own storyline and plot, since this is a fan fiction story contest – you can base it on the True Blood – Season Two storylines but you must remember to respect Charlaine Harris, Alan Ball, and also HBO Network since in truth they are technically True Blood’s Copyright Rights Owners. So, remember to show some respect in that area.
- Creativity: You can get as creative as you like with your storylines and plots. I just ask that if it is a story meant for MATURE AUDIENCES – you put some kind of warning at the very beginning to warn readers of it’s mature content.
- Length: The length of the story must be at a reasonable length – I would say short but sweet but we all know any story that is that short and sweet may lack a good quality plot and storyline. So, make it a reasonable length.
FIRST PLACE PRIZE: There will be (2) spots open for FIRST PLACE PRIZE- one for each category: “MISSING VAMP” Poster Contest and “What Has Happened To Bill?” Fan Fiction Story Contest. The winners of this category will win the following items:
- True Blood Season One & Season Two DVD Set (Choice of Blu-Ray or Regular DVD)
- True Blood Season One & Season Two Soundtrack
- True Blood Beverage
- Official “MISSING BILL COMPTON” HBO Poster
- True Blood Bill Bust
- Merlotte’s T-Shirt
- Fangtasia T-Shirt
- Bill Compton Poster
SECOND PLACE PRIZES: Like the FIRST PLACE PRIZES – we have (2) Open Spots for SECOND PLACE PRIZES and they are for the following categories: “MISSING VAMP” Poster Contest and “What Has Happened To Bill?” Fan Fiction Story Contest. And here is what the winners of SECOND PLACE will win:
- Official “MISSING BILL COMPTON” HBO Poster
- Bill Compton Poster
- True Blood Beverage
- True Blood Season One and Season Two Soundtracks
Help & Support: If you need assistance or have questions about anything in regards to these two contests – please contact me via our site’s Contact Form and I will try my very best to assist you to the best of my abilities with anything you need assistance with or have questions about.
ENJOY YOURSELVES – HAVE FUN!!! And last but not least, enjoy yourselves and have fun while participating in these contests that we have on here!!!
How To Sign Up: If you are interested in signing up for either one or both of these contests, you can contact me via our site’s Contact Form stating you are interested in participating in either one or both of these contests. And if you are interested in participating in just one of these contests – please state which one. Huge thanks in advance! And best of luck to all those who are participating!!!

Sam Trammell

What’s a guy who was nominated for a Tony doing running around a swamp naked? Do you think he got the job as bar owner Sam Merlotte on “True Blood” because he has the same first name? I wonder if Sam Trammell has asked himself these very questions. We’ve got to give it to the fickle finger of fate that gave this man a job and brought him to our attention. It’s example of yet another fantastic actor on a fantastic show and a reason to sit around the office water cool and wax poetic a new one2watch4.
Sam Trammell is one of those actor’s who didn’t start off with the intention of becoming an actor. Born in New Orleans and raised in West Virginia (a true southern gentlemen!) Sam was studying philosophy at Brown University when the acting bug bit him. After some success on Broadway, including that Tony nomination in 1998 revival of Ah! Wilderness Sam ventured out to the West Coast. Then Trammell set about to build up an impressive TV resume: “House”, “Medium”, “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” among others. Clearly it was just a matter of time before he’d be in the right place at the right time.
On “True Blood” Sam Merlotte’s bar is the center of the action in sleepy but creepy Bon Temps with Sam desperately trying to protect those he loves. But Sam is a man with a past and a secret. His desire to keep that secret may ultimately be his undoing. It looks like this season is going be an exciting one to watch Sam Trammell explore his character and possibly do a little more streaking through the woods. I trust you have no objections to that.

Ryan Kwanten

I knew nothing about Ryan Kwanten prior to watching him as Jason Stackhouse on “True Blood” other than he had a rockin’ bod. (And lucky me, they tend to show it a lot on this show.) As it turns out that was an excellent foray into the life and work of this Australia actor. Surprised? Yes, Ryan hails from down under but seems perfectly at ease in the wilds of Louisiana as well as the sandy beaches of Southern California. With an impressive body…of work behind him and what looks to be a sensational season ahead of him on “True Blood” Ryan’s got it made in the shade for long while.
I’m reading an interview with Ryan in a recent edition of Venice Magazine and he mentions how he had no real intention of moving to Hollywood and giving things a go stateside. Ryan had a decent career, scoring several TV roles in Australia including the ubiquitous soap “Home and Away”. He was in LA promoting a TV movie he’d done called “The Junction Boys” (2002, a story about Bear Bryant and the Texas A&M football team, strangely, shot in Australia with an entirely Australia cast save Tom Berenger as Bryant.) and he started receiving such great feedback about his performance in the piece. He decided to stay on and started wracking up roles here. Among those parts were the short-lived series “Summerland” and the feature Flicka (2006). I know, not the most stellar of projects but it was enough to get him noticed by “True Blood” creator Alan Ball and the rest is history.
Just how does this fine young man stay in tip-top shape? I’m glad you asked. He’s a qualified yoga instructor, (can you say FLEXIBLE?) and he’s twice won, yes WON the Los Angeles Biathlon. The man has some serious drive. Of course that carries over into his professional life. Jason Stackhouse has got some major issues to work out this season which all adds up to an incredible opportunity for Ryan to strut his stuff, theatrically speaking. Though if he were naked while he was doing all this amazing work, I would not mind in the slightest.

Alexander Skarsgård

Confession time. I have a kink for vampires. The undead don’t generally have to work terribly hard to endear themselves to me. And if that vampire happen to be six feet and four inches of pure Nordic gorgeousness, then their job is even easier. Step up to the plate, Alexander Skarsgård.
It may be his current role as enigmatic Viking vampire Eric Northman in HBO’s True Blood that has raised his international profile, but Skarsgård has long been an established star in his native Sweden. Son of renowned actor Stellan Skarsgård, Alexander made his own screen debut at just seven years of age, and went on to become a popular child star. Unnerved by his growing celebrity, he turned his back on acting at the age of thirteen to pursue other interests. He studied Political Science, served in the Swedish Marines, and was contemplating a return to school to study architecture when the acting bug finally bit him once more. Since then he has accumulated over fifteen international film and television credits, not to mention been voted Sweden’s sexiest man no fewer than five times. Eat your heart out, George Clooney!
He made his Hollywood debut with a small role in the movie Zoolander (2001), but it was in the acclaimed mini-series Generation Kill (2007) that he really made his mark. Shrugging off initial doubts about his casting, he completely dropped his Swedish accent to convincingly portray real life US Marine Sgt Brad ‘Iceman’ Colbert, earning widespread critical praise and no doubt bringing him to the attention of the True Blood casting bods.
With a strong pedigree and obvious talent already in his favor, Alexander’s growing legion of female fans will also be pleased to learn that this is one thespian who isn’t exactly precious when it comes to taking his clothes off. As well as a joking insistence that he should have nude scenes written into all his contracts, he has also claimed that he will pose as a Playgirl centerfold in exchange for “a chicken burrito and a pint of strawberry ice cream.”
So with True Blood returning this month for its second season, shall this sexy Swede be putting his money where his mouth is and giving us Eric Northman in the buff? We can only wait and see. In the meantime, does anybody have a good recipe for a chicken burrito?
